Set Dressing | Lookdev | Lighting Maya Arnold
This project is a lighting study based on traditional Dutch Golden Age "Banquet" paintings. My goal was to recreate the classical, elegant atmosphere where a seemingly disorganized scene is actually a meticulously arranged composition.
This exercise challenged my skills in set dressing and visual storytelling. While working from a masterpiece reference, I had to make strategic choices about which assets to include and which to omit to maintain a clear focal point in a 3D environment.
Challenge #1: Directing the Viewer’s Eye
In the original painting, the lobster acts as the focal point due to its high saturation and its position on the Rule of Thirds.
In my recreation, I replaced the lobster with a floral bouquet as the primary subject. This required a complete reconfiguration of the scene's leading lines. I used the arrangement of flower stems, plate edges, and the fall of the drapery to guide the viewer’s eye toward the lower-left corner, maintaining the balanced "diagonal" flow of the original masterpiece.
Challenge #2: Lighting & Shading
The most significant technical challenge of this project was ensuring every asset remained legible within the deep shadows without competing with the main subject. To achieve this "painterly" look, I moved beyond standard lighting setups by using a combination of Spotlights and Area Lights to specifically highlight textures and silhouettes. I further controlled the light behavior by utilizing Light Blockers and custom Light Decay settings to prevent spill, allowing me to meticulously "sculpt" the piece. This level of value control ensured the shadows remained rich and atmospheric while the bouquet stayed the undisputed hero of the frame.reference: Banquet Still Life, by Adriaen van Utrecht in 1644
